Gary Smith
Ste. Genevieve Ward 1 alderman Dr. Gary Smith resigned last week. A notification from City Administrator Happy Welch said it was for “personal reasons.”
Smith, who also teaches at Ste. Genevieve High School, had served as an alderman previously.
He ran unopposed twice, including in April of this year.
In his one opposed election, in 2020, he got 41 votes to Sam Ewing’s 15 votes and Jerry “Lemon” Klein’s six votes.
“For the next Ward 1 alderperson, the Mayor will appoint an individual with the consent of the Board of Alderpersons to serve until next year’s election in April,” Welch’s notice stated. “The person who is elected in April will serve the remainder of Alderman Smith’s term which will be only one-year and will be up for election again in 2025.”
