DE SOTO, Mo. — Lightweight Kaden Gegg won his bracket and Joseph Flieg was edged out to take second place as Valle Catholic finished sixth overall at
the 20-team, 45th annual Bob Georger Classic wrestling tournament at DHS on Saturday (Jan. 28).
The Warriors scored 116.5 team points to finish in the top 10.
Gegg pinned all three of his opponents, as his pin times shortened drastically as he went through his 106-pound bracket. He was the only one of nine teammates to win his bracket.
Gegg pinned Webster Groves’ Michael Corrigan in 59 seconds in the finals.
Flieg also reached the finals in the 132-pound group, taking home the silver medal. He won by forfeit in the first round, then pinned his quarterfinal foe, and destroyed his semifinal in an 11-0 major decision, before falling to Liberty’s Aidan Kelly in the championship bout.
Four other Warriors finished in the top four of their brackets.
Conner Clanton (126) took third place, pinning North County’s Brady Duncan in the third-place match in 1:58 to earn the bronze medal.
Fourth place finishers were Wil Kuehn (138), Jayce Bales (165) and Jacob Calbreath (190).
Gavyn Joggerst (150) took fifth, while Tucker Bertrand (175) took sixth.
The heavyweights, Noah Elbert (215) and Espn Reed (285) also wrestled but did not place.
Sullivan won the event with 182 points, followed by Liberty (Wentzville-179.5), Sikeston (146.5), the host (146) and Windsor (Imperial-144) to round out the top five teams.
The Warriors’ triangular duals at New Madrid County (with Kennett) and Potosi (with St. Pius X) were postponed with no dates set to reschedule.
The Warriors hold senior night on Wednesday (Feb. 1) in a quad-match with Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau) Bulldogs, St. Mary’s (St. Louis) Dragons and St. Pius X (Festus) Lancers, then visit Herculaneum Thursday (Feb. 2), both set for 6 p.m.
