Dragons 2nd At Rebels’ Girls’ Tourney

Zangaro, Picou, Wheeler Win Brackets

Ste. Genevieve claimed second place out of 17 schools after five members reached the championship finals of their respective brackets at the fifth annual Lady Rebels Invitational girls’ wrestling tournament at Central High in Park Hills on Saturday (1.7).

Three had first-place finishes and two more finished as runner-ups as the Dragons scored 84 team points. The host Rebels won the event with 101 points.

Hollyn Zangaro (120-pound division), Ragan Picou (140) and Haley Wheeler (145) each won their respective brackets to combine for 41 total points.

Zangaro scored a team-high 18 team points, while Picou had nine points and Wheeler added 14 points.

Linley Wehner (115) and Addison Geiler (125) both took second place. Geiler also scored 18 points, while Wehner had four points.

Katlynn Lay (130) and Liliana Hastings (190) both took fourth. Lay had nine points and Hastings had five points.

Festus took third place with 76 points, followed by Potosi (46) and Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau-38) to round out the top five.

Hillsboro 27, Dragons 18

HILLSBORO, Mo.  —  Ste. Genevieve won two matches by pinfall and another by forfeit, but the Hawks prevailed anyway last Wednesday (1.4) at HHS.

There were six double forfeits    including the first three weight divisions    to make for the low-scoring dual.

The Dragons trailed 15-0 from the start.

Addison Geiler pinned Ava Culley in one minute at the 130-pound match.

Katlynn Lay (135) pinned Ella Bingham in two minutes, which cut it to 15-12.

Ste. Genevieve would lose to more matches before Liliana Hastings later won via forfeit two wrap up the dual.

The Dragons’ girls’ and boys’ squads head to Jackson Wednesday (1.11) at 6 p.m. in a tri-match with Sikeston, then both compete in the St. Charles High tournament.
