Lady Warriors lead state track after Day 1

Samantha Loida won the state championship in the 800-meter run Friday afternoon, smashing her own school record in the process as Valle Catholic leads the girls’ competition after Day 1 at the MSHSAA Class 1 track and field meet at Jefferson City High’s Adkins Stadium.
Loida, a senior, broke her own school record in the 800m with a time of 2 minutes-19.20 seconds. The previous record she reset was 2:25.52 on May 7 at the district track meet that Lady Warriors won.
After Day 1, Valle’s girls lead with 24 points after five completed events. St. Paul Lutheran (Concordia) sits at second with 18.5 points and Atlanta had 18 points for third at the moment.
Also earning all-state medals after one day were senior Ella Bertram in the shot put, as well as senior Camryn Basler and freshman Madelyn Griffard, both in the 1,600m run.
Basler took third place with a time of 5:35.22, while Griffard was hot on her heels at 5:35.89. Together, they scored 10 total points in that competition.
Bertram took sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 10.81 meters (35 feet-5.75 inches).
Meanwhile in the Class 2 boys’ state meet , Valle’s 4×800-meter relay team of Josh Fallert, Braden Coleman, Josef Flieg and Peter Roth earned all-state medals with an eighth-place finish. Their time was 8:32.97.
Action continues with Day 2 on Saturday.
