CHAFFEE – State-ranked Valle Catholic committed an uncanny seven errors and therefore suffered its first loss of the season in a 9-4 decision to Ellington Saturday afternoon at CHS.
The Whippets (3-2), also known as Southern Reynolds County High, scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning plus two more in the second and held on from there.
The road Warriors (5-1), who only had four hits, cut that deficit to two runs in the fifth with three runs, but Ellington scored in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the sixth. Valle got its final run in the seventh to complete its second game of the windy and chilly day.
“This game is one we’d like to have back, but that’s baseball,” Warriors head coach Nathan Gegg said. “We were sloppy in the field, we were a mess at the plate, it was one we need to learn from, store the feeling and move on to the next game hopefully a little smarter, a little better and with a little more fire and passion regarding any day you get to play the game of baseball.”
