Mountain Lion Likely Culprit In Death Of County Calf

By MARK EVANS

STE. GENEVIEVE HERALD

Something big got hold of a calf in southwestern Ste. Francois Country about the first of December.

It was found dead, on the other side of the fence it had been behind.

The owner, State Representative Dale Wright, said he knew there was a good chance he was dealing with a giant cat on his farm at Routes AA and F.

A couple of days later, a neighbor showed him a game camera photo of a 100- to 150-pound mountain lion. Wright assumes this was the culprit.

Ste. Genevieve County Conservation Agent Rob Sulkowski said a large cat was killed on a highway in the county later in December.

He said that young males will frequently “be wondering around, looking for territory” during the winter.
