This year, the Ste. Genevieve High School Gaming Club held its first annual Smashgiving event, a fundraising effort where student gamers competed in a Super Smash Bros tournament.

The event was held on Nov. 23, and club members could enter the tournament through bringing in a donation to local families during Thanksgiving.

Prizes for this year’s Smashgiving were donated and provided by Iggy’s Pop Shop, a local gaming and retail shop in Ste. Genevieve.

The winners of the tournament are below:

1st Place: Russell Kirkhuff, who won a $25 Gift Certificate to Iggy’s Pop Shop

2nd Place: Justin Harris, who won a $10 Gift Certificate to Iggy’s Pop Shop

3rd Place: Jimmy Kirkhuff, who won a $5 Gift Certificate to Iggy’s Pop Shop

4th Place: Orlando Jordan, who won a $5 Gift Certificate to Iggy’s Pop Shop

Door Prize: Andrew Miget won a $5 Gift Certificate to Iggy’s Pop Shop

“With a full roster of 16 participants, the students played valiantly and handled losses good-naturedly,” SGHS Gaming Club sponsor and high school teacher Ian Diamond said.

“We want to thank all of those who shared kind words or were supportive of our students in this event. It means a lot to our kids, and to us as sponsors, as well. We would like to share a special thanks to the library staff for accommodating our event and helping to everything up. And we want to share a warm thank you to Iggy Zielinski of Iggy’s Pop Shop for his generous donation of $50 in prizes and for helping to run the event.”
