PERRYVILLE — The Ste. Genevieve and Valle Catholic volleyball teams opened the season in an informal fashion on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

The Dragons and Warriors participated in a four-team jamboree against Perryville and St. Vincent.

Valle Catholic went 2-1, with victories over Perryville and St. Vincent in straight sets.  Ste. Genevieve split sets versus St. Vincent; but defeated Valle Catholic and host Perryville.

Score was kept; however, the main goal of the jamboree was to prepare for Monday’s season-opening matches.

Ste. Genevieve was set to entertain Jackson while Valle Catholic traveled to Potosi.

“I thought in the jamboree we played fairly well,” said Ste. Genevieve head coach Carla Basler. “The hitters were starting to connect with our new setters. Setters mixed the ball around, and the girls never gave up on any play.”

Ste. Genevieve spent the jamboree working on consistency with serves, outside hitters transitioning from defense to attack and work on serve reception.

Valle Catholic head coach Nancy Fischer said she was pleased with the outcome of the jamboree as well.

“We had some very good moments,” the coach commented. “But, we also had some moments when we didn’t play nearly as well as we would have liked.”

Fischer said the Warriors will continue working on improving their serving and serve reception.

Fischer said one of the main goals of the jamboree was to give every single girl an opportunity to play.

Valle Catholic returned to Perryville on Tuesday night for another match versus the Pirates.

The price of admission for the jamboree was a canned good for the Southeast Missouri Foodbank, Ladies of Charity Food Pantry at St. Vincent de Paul Parish and First Baptist Church.
