No One Injured As Cars Tumble, Block North Main
From Staff Reports
Four rail cars derailed while crossing North Main Street at about 8 p.m., last Thursday.
According to witnesses and a video of the event, a group of cars, not connected to a locomotive, somehow got loose and careened down the track at possibly 45 miles per hour or faster, derailing as the Union Pacific track crossed the street. North Main was blocked for some time by the derailment, which was being cleaned up early Friday morning.
The cars were moving material for Mississippi Lime Company (MLC). No one was injured.
“Mississippi Lime’s Operations team is actively investigating and will implement safety improvements to prevent this kind of incident from occurring in the future,” an MLC statement said through email to the Herald. “Safety has been and continues to be our top priority at Mississippi Lime.”
