Both the Ste. Genevieve and Valle Catholic High School boys’ and girls’ basketball teams learned their fates for the upcoming postseason last week.

Ste. Genevieve’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both have drawn the No. 1 seed for the Class 4 District 2 tournament.

With the Dragons earning the top seed, that means both the boys and girls will open the playoffs with a home game.

Despite losing this past Saturday to Steelville, Ste. Genevieve commands respect with a 15-5 record.

In the girls’ field after Ste. Genevieve, Park Hills Central

is second with Herculaneum third, Potosi fourth, St. Clair fifth and Fredericktown sixth.

“The girls have won some big games late in the season, and the No. 1 seed reflects that,” Ste. Genevieve head girls’ coach Jordanna Walk-Robison said. “They worked hard for it, and are very deserving.”

Ste. Genevieve’s girls will play the winner of a game between Fredericktown and St. Clair, which is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The girls’ game will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 1.

Ste. Genevieve R-II athletic director Dr. Jeff Nix said he’s currently getting workers together for various operations ranging from the clock to the gate and video board duties to singing the national anthem.

Park Hills Central will play the winner of the game between Potosi and Herculaneum, also set for noon Feb. 27.

On the boys’ side, Ste. Genevieve will play the winner of a first-round game between Potosi and St. Clair scheduled for 5 p.m. Feb. 27.

Ste. Genevieve’s boys will play at 6 p.m. on March 2, much to the delight of Dragons’ head coach Robert Coleman.

“We had to beat three out of the five, and had the best record,” Coleman said. “Obviously, being the No. 1 seed is always a great place to be. It means you have done well during the season. But, now we have a lot to live up to.”

The boys currently sport a 14-6 record, with a short list of regular-season games left on the docket.

Talk about a tough draw, Valle Catholic’s boys — even with a standout record of 15-8 — are the fifth seed in Class 2 District 3.

The Warriors will play Meadow Heights on the road at 1 p.m. this Saturday. The winner of that game will the face district host Oran at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The other half of the draw features an opening-round game between St. Vincent and Puxico, with the winner then facing Advance in the semifinals.

On the girls’ side, Valle Catholic (8-14) will play the home team versus Puxico on Monday, Feb. 22.

The site and location of the game has yet to be determined, as reported by Valle head girls’ coach Brian Bauman in a text to the Ste. Genevieve Herald.

Valle has been told it can’t play host to the game because the school doesn’t have handicap-accessible restrooms, Bauman explained. The Ste. Genevieve County Community Center is booked that night. There’s the possibility Valle may travel to Puxico for the game.

The winner of the Valle Catholic-Puxico game will play St. Vincent in the semifinals.

The other half of the bracket has Meadow Heights squaring off with Advance in the first round, with the winner taking on Oran at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24.
