Poor Weather Already Causing Schedule Shuffle

From STAFF REPORTS

Mineral Area Activities Association regular-season basketball champions were determined last week throughout the region.

The Valle Catholic boys earned the Small School Division title, and the Ste. Genevieve girls claimed their third straight Large School Division crown.

Ste. Genevieve’s boys were second in the Large School Division behind venerable North County. Valle Catholic’s girls were in the middle of the pack in the Small School Division.

This week, the MAAA will determine conference tournament champions, with games set for Bob Sechrest Field House on the Mineral Area College campus in Park Hills.

Consolation bracket games are also scheduled at North County in Bonne Terre, Kingston and West County in Leadwood.

Some first-round games took place on Saturday, with Valle Catholic topping Kingston 64-41 — advancing to the quarterfinals at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday versus Farmington.

Valle Catholic’s girls suffered a first-round loss to Potosi, 61-47 — now relegated to a consolation game versus Valley Caledonia at 6:30 p.m. tonight versus Kingston.

Ste. Genevieve’s girls’ were originally expected to open quarterfinal play on Monday versus Fredericktown; however, the game was scrapped on account of anticipated poor weather that evening. The Dragons had received an opening-round bye.

Ste. Genevieve’s boys, thanks to being seeded second after last Wednesday’s coaches’ meeting, also were given a first-round bye.

The Dragons played Arcadia Valley 5 p.m. Tuesday. Arcadia Valley defeated Valley Caledonia in an opening round game this past Saturday at Farmington High School.

Ste. Genevieve R-II School District athletic director Dr. Jeff Nix reports the conference tournament will be “tickets only.” Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.
