KENNETT — The Ste. Genevieve High School football team will experience different circumstances coming into this offseason.

Kennett eliminated Ste. Genevieve in the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 3 District 1 semifinals, 47-29, at Metz Cherry Stadium on Friday night.

After the Dragons exited the playoffs in 2019, head coach Ken Weik faced the difficult prospect of replacing 22 seniors.

This year, only six will be lost to graduation — but there are some solid pieces leaving in Bret Bieser and Payton Matthews plus Chaytin Lea, Zach Burr, Landon Rose and Anthony Nash.

“Bret became a vocal leader,” Weik said. “He was the one who helped us get ready to play. He played slot wide receiver, defensive back, linebacker and tight end.”

Payton Matthews was Ste. Genevieve’s go-to wide receiver, and he made a memory versus Kennett — catching a 99-yard TD reception from sophomore quarterback Aiden Boyer. Beiser had 31 yards in catches and two solo tackles.

Burr was the Dragons’ lone senior starter on the offensive line, showing versatility at both center and guard. He also played spot defense if Weik needed him to.
