Thomas D. Engle Sr.
Thomas D. Engle Sr. of Ste. Genevieve died on Thursday, May 7, 2020, at Ste. Genevieve Care Center. He was 81 years old.
He was born November 11, 1938, in Muskegon, Michigan, a son of the late Raymond and Sara May (Nolan) Engle.
He was married to Martha B. (Braun) Engle on March 6, 1965, and she survives in Ste. Genevieve.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Tom Engle Jr. and his wife Kelley of Middleton, Wisconsin, Robert Engle of Atlanta, Georgia, Darin Engle and his wife Marietta of Atlanta, Georgia; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Elizabeth, Julian, Emeline.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Engle Jr.; and one granddaughter, Elise Claire Engle.
He was a native of Muskegon, Michigan. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with an associate’s degree in fire protection technology and a bachelor’s degree in political science. Formerly of Crestwood, Missouri, he worked for two insurance brokers in St. Louis — Marsh and McLennon [24 years] and Rollins Burdick Hunter [seven years] — as a protection consultant and department vice president. He was an instructor of evening classes for firefighters at several area community colleges.
After retiring to Ste. Genevieve County he worked briefly as building inspector for the city and did consulting work for fire districts throughout the state.
A past president of the Ste. Genevieve Rotary Club, he organized the first annual duck race, an ongoing club project and a staple of Jour de Fete.
He was a passionate hockey fan and an inaugural St. Louis Blues season ticket holder. He was proud to have visited all 50 states and nearly 40 countries.
A private service will take place at a later date at Bayview Memorial Garden in Petoskey, Michigan, a favorite vacation destination of his. Basler Funeral Home of Ste. Genevieve is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Crown Hospice.
