Ste. Genevieve County Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson reassured County Collector Claudia Stuppy that she was taking the right path during last Thursday’s Commission meeting.
Stuppy reported that she had dropped off an updated contract between her office and the city of Ste. Genevieve at City Hall a week earlier and had not heard back.
The new contract specifies that she will not collect fines that are being levied as taxes. [The Ste. Genevieve aldermen that night approved the first reading of a bill authorizing the renewal of the amended contract.]
Nelson told her to ignore any comments she might hear from city personnel or residents that she is not doing her job by declining to collect these taxes.
“You’re protecting the county,” Nelson told her. “You are doing your job. If you hear that story [that you’re not doing it], just shake it off your back.”
