Three Charged After Attempt To Steal Truck

The Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday reported the arrest of three individuals from Washington County in relation to an attempt to steal a truck in Ste. Genevieve County.

On Sunday, June 30, at approximately 9:42 a.m., Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 2400 block of Route J in reference to subjects attempting to steal a truck at the residence.

Upon arrival at approximately 9:43 a.m., the deputies made contact with the reporting party. The victim reported that she was inside her house and heard her husband’s truck start up in the driveway. When the victim walked outside, she noticed three people inside the truck. The victim said she heard them yelling, so she yelled, “I’m calling 911” and all the subjects ran from her residence.

The reporting party reported the subjects appeared to be in their early to mid-twenties, one wearing a black tank top and shorts, and one with blonde hair.

After speaking to the victim, deputies left the residence to canvas the area for the described subjects. At approximately 10:35 a.m., dispatch advised the Sheriff’s Office that a subject called from the another address located in the 2400 block of Route J and advised dispatch that there were subjects on the property.

When deputies arrived, a male subject in a green pickup truck asked the deputies to follow him. They continued down a long gravel drive leading into farmland. Upon stopping, deputies noticed a male and blonde-haired female walking out of the wooded area of the property toward the gravel roadway.

Deputies made contact and placed both subjects into custody. Upon speaking to both subjects, they advised that they came from St. Louis and were partying and camping in the area with a buddy.

A short time later, deputies were called to the Ozora Truck and Travel Center for a male subject fitting the description of one of the individuals in the attempted truck theft. He was taken into custody without incident.

Previous to this incident, deputies had responded to Route J in reference to a pickup truck on fire.

It was later learned that this burning truck was towing a stolen box trailer which was also involved in a pursuit from Sparta, Illinois, earlier in the morning.

The burned truck belonged to one of the individuals arrested for the attempted truck theft.

Three subjects, two males and one female, were taken into custody for the truck theft and are being held pending application of warrants. They were being held at the Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center.

Charged on Monday with tampering with a motor vehicle and trespassing second degree were: Anna M. Skaggs, 29, of Potosi; Jeffery Skaggs, 30, of Mineral Point; and Bryan J. Cain, 37 of Cadet.

Their bonds were set at $750.00 cash only.
