County Fair Celebrates 75th Anniversary

Ste. Genevieve County Fair Board president Keith Skaggs expects the 2019 county fair to be one of the best yet.

The fair, scheduled for Thursday, July 11, through Sunday, June 14, is celebrating its 75th anniversary since its inception in 1944.

Skaggs hopes the anniversary year will be free of weather disruptions like last year. The 2018 fair saw some events canceled during the first part of the fair, due to high temperatures. Rain then washed out much of the Saturday and Sunday activities.

Skaggs said he believes it will be an outstanding fair “as long as Mother Nature leaves us alone.”

There will not be many major changes to the fair lineup.

“It’s pretty much the same thing,” Skaggs said. “Instead of running the super stock trucks on Thursday, we’re having our kart races and lawnmower races on Thursday. We’re trying something different.”

Two new items that will be available throughout the fair are a mechanical bull and “The Hangman.”

“The Hangman is a bar that you have,” board vice president Kim Gielow said. “If you can hang for 100 seconds, you win $100. He said it went well at the SEMO Fair, so I told him we’d give it a try. It will be something different, that’s for sure.”

The cow chip lotto is being replaced with chicken chip squares.
