Levee Holds Back Rising Mississippi River
The Urban Design Levee protected the city of Ste. Genevieve on April 2 as the Mississippi River climbed above 39.5 feet according to the gauge at Chester, Illinois.
The river crested at 39.73 feet, just shy of major flood stage, on April 3 and hovered just below that mark into April 4. The river stage was at 38.55 feet as of 11 p.m. Sunday night.
Flooding last week forced the closure of Highway 61 in St. Mary as well as portions of Route J, but the forecast for the next 10 days has the river expected to fall back below 32 feet.
