River Rises, Crest Predicted This Week

Water was creeping onto Highway 61 in St. Mary late last week as floodwaters related to a rising Mississippi River began creeping up on the bend. The road was closed by the weekend and traffic was detoured one block over.

As of Sunday night, the Mississippi River had reached 38.37 feet on the gauge at Chester, Illinois.

The predicted crest had been as high as 39.9 feet, just under the major flooding category, but by Sunday night that had been revised down to 39.7 feet, expected to be reached on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 3, through the morning of Friday, April 5.
