Letter: Weaver’s Comments Divide Country, Make It Weaker
To the Editor:
Mason Weaver, whose real name is Clarence Mason, said at the local Republican Club on March 5 that Democrats want you to be ashamed to be American. (Ste. Genevieve Herald, March 13, Page 9A) I doubt any Democrat, Republican or Independent wants you to be ashamed to be American.
The Pledge of Allegiance says “one nation, under God, indivisible.” Remarks like Mr. Weaver’s divide us and make our country weaker. Mr. Weaver talks about how we rescued and kicked the butts of European nations. We did that as Democrats, Republicans and Independents. We did that as the United States, not Divided States, of America.
Mason Weaver also spoke at the Christian Men’s Breakfast on March 3. I don’t know how Jesus would vote in any election, but I suspect he would vote for the person, not the party. As the great Republican Abraham Lincoln said, “Sir, my concern is not whether God is in our side; my concern is to be on God’s side for God is always right.”
As a Democrat, I may challenge your positions, but I will not challenge your patriotism or politicize religion.
Carl D. Kinsky,
Ste. Genevieve
