The Valle volleyball team played three tense matches last week.

And while the Warriors won two out of three, in the postseason, that left them short of reaching the final four of the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 tournament.

After beating Arcadia Valley in 27-25, 31-29 to win the Class 2 District 3 tournament at West County High School in St. Francois County, Valle on Saturday defeated host Woodland in three sets in the sectional round before falling to Festus St. Pius in three sets and by the narrowest of margins.

Valle lost 25-21, 19-25, 25-23.

The Warriors finished the season 26-7-1.

They advanced a step further than last year, when they were swept out of the sectional by eventual state champion Advance.

“At the end of the season this year, we played really good volleyball in the district and in the sectional,” Valle coach Nancy Fischer said. “We just ended up getting beaten by a team that played a little better than we did.

“Last year, we didn’t play well in the sectional, and that was kind of difficult to finish the season not playing good volleyball. I felt, this year, even though we were disappointed in the outcome, we weren’t disappointed in ourselves.”

Festus St. Pius, which swept Twin Rivers in the sectional round, takes a 22-6-2 record to the final four this weekend at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. Joining the Lancers in the field are St. Paul Lutheran, Hermann and Licking.
