The Ste. Genevieve girls volleyball team battled through a season of injuries and adversity, but the Dragons came together with a stunning run to the Class 3 District 2 championship last week at Park Hills.

Ste. Genevieve’s season ended Saturday at home with a 25-13, 25-18 loss to Windsor in the sectional round.

Windsor (23-9-5) went on to beat Perryville in three sets to earn a berth in the Class 3 final four this weekend at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. The field also includes St. Michael the Archangel, St. Francis Borgia and Logan-Rogersville.

Ste. Genevieve finished 14-15-1, but it had won eight of nine matches heading into the sectional.

Ste. Genevieve followed a 3-1 run to fifth place in the MAAA tournament with a three-match winning streak from the No. 5 seed to the district championship. The Dragons knocked off top seed Park Hills Central in three sets along the way.

It was during tournament week that the Dragons finally were able to field the lineup they planned to have at the start of the season.

“Farmington [on October 23] was our first game running our original rotation with everybody healthy,” coach Jess Fallert said. “Then, we played a few really good games, but unfortunately I’d like to have a little more time with a full squad.”
