Ste. Genevieve’s pitching and defense has played a key role at the start of the season, but its offense erupted again Wednesday night.

Post 150 put together 13 hits with three of those good for extra bags, Kellen Blum held Rock Memorial to only three hits, and Ste. Genevieve routed Post 283 with a 15-1 five-inning win in district play.

“I thought Kellen threw the ball extremely well,” said Ste. Genevieve head coach Junie Basler. “He was pounding the zone with a lot of strikes. He made them put the ball in play and let our defense go to work. Hitting wise I know they had quite a few errors, but I thought we hit the ball extremely well again. I think the key for us, especially these last two games, has been to jump out on our opponents early with three or four we had last night at the first and then followed it up with nine in the second. If we continue to jump on teams early I think you can take them out of their game, and they try to press and possibly do too much at the plate. That's to our advantage.”

Rock Memorial failed to use a one-out double by Shaun Drud, and Post 150 struck first in the bottom of the inning. Grant Staffen led off with a single, Tyler Blum reached on an error, and Keaton Boyer worked a free pass with one out to load the bags. A wild pitch scored Staffen and advanced the other two runners before Kyle Roth took a 2-1 pitch to right field to score those runners. Roth made it to second base on the throw to home, and pinch runner stole third base.

Derek Morganthaler scored Palmer on a ground ball for a 4-0 lead.

Kellen Blum retired the next three batters in the second inning with Staffen’s help. Staffen slid to stop a deep infield ground ball by Sean Lewis, then made the throw to first baseman Chad Donze, who scooped the ball up to end the inning.
