High school sports fans won’t have to wait much longer for the sports seasons to begin.
With the 2019-20 school year underway, fall sports teams throughout the nation are getting ready for the upcoming season. For Ste. Genevieve and Valle, both schools will be a part of a couple of scrimmages, and Ste. Genevieve will host both events.
The first scrimmage will be held on Friday at Dragons Stadium for the annual football jamboree. In addition to the host and neighbor Valle, the two neighboring programs will be joined by St. Pius and Park Hills Central. All four teams will face each other once and will get a set number of offensive plays before the ball goes to the other team. Once the two competing teams complete their plays, they will face another program until all four teams have scrimmaged each other.
Two scrimmages will be held simultaneously with each one taking place at a different side of the field. The Ste. Genevieve/Valle scrimmage usually takes place at the end of the event and will likely stay that way before the two teams meet in Week 2. The jamboree is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The next scrimmage will be held on Tuesday, August 27 at the Peggy J. Johnson Gymnasium as four volleyball teams will square off. Ste. Genevieve and Valle will meet Perryville and St. Vincent.
The jamboree host rotates every year, and with St. Vincent and Perryville hosting the event last year and the year before, respectively, the scrimmage returns to Ste. Genevieve this year. Valle will likely host the jamboree next year.
Just like the football jamboree, the volleyball scrimmage will utilize some modified rules. In past jamborees only two sets were played regardless of who won, each set was played to 15, and the serve went to the other team if one team scored three straight points.
Also similar to the football jamboree, Ste. Genevieve and Valle will meet in the final scrimmage of the night after the two programs face the Perry County programs. The first serve will take place at 5 p.m.
