The Old Settlement Rivalry series always brings out a sizable crowd regardless of sport, but the biggest draw in the series takes place during football season. That rivalry gets renewed this week.
Valle will make the short trip to Dragons Stadium to face host Ste. Genevieve for the 56th meeting this Friday. One team will keep its undefeated season alive while the other team will fall to an even .500 mark as both programs enter the game 1-0.
“It was 7-6 [Ste. Genevieve] last year,” said Valle head coach Judd Naeger. “It was an even match. It’s a great game for our town. It’s a good game for our kids. I’m sure we’re going to be evenly matched again.”
Valle has a 29-26 edge in the series and had a five-game streak over the Dragons until Ste. Genevieve defeated the Warriors last year at Father John Dempsey Field.
“It’s always a good hometown rivalry game,” said Valle junior running back C.J. Stoll. “We’re going to come out and we’re going to be ready to play.”
The Warriors enter the contest off of a 36-7 win at St. Vincent.
The Dragons dismantled Dexter 49-7 on the road.
Asked if he thought this year's game would be as low-scoring as last year's, Ste. Genevieve coach Ken Weik said, "I don’t think so either, but you know what, I’ll take a 7-6, as long as I’m on the 7 side.’
“I think it will be [higher scoring], and that’s OK, as long as they’re having fun. If we’re scoring points and they’re scoring points, we’ll make a game of it. I just hope it doesn’t get lopsided.
“Last year was a super game. We both came off [the field] tired as heck but we all came off with smiles on our faces. We were smiling bigger than they were, but that’s the kind of game you want with them."
